2011 FireHawk Firefighter Challenge

2011 FFC

The Corley-Mountain Rural Fire Department held the 4th annual FireHawk Firefighter Challenge at the Paris Fairgrounds on Saturday, September 17, 2011. The challenge events began at around 10 a.m. Four teams competed in the competition. Firefighters from the Corley-Mtn., Driggs, New Blaine, and Ratcliff volunteer fire departments participated. The day was dominated by the Corley and Driggs teams. The Driggs team won the Donning PPE and Water Bucket Battle competitions. The Corley team won the Hose Roll and Search and Rescue competitions. In the end, it was the Corley team who became the first repeat champions in the history of the event. The team members were Jackie Moeller, Errick Ellington, and Rick Faldon. These same three also won the title back in 2009. These firefighters became the first two-time champions of the event. A silent auction was also held and meals were served throughout the day. The raffle for the Remington Express 870 3" 12 Gauge shotgun was won by Brice Tencleve. The event served as the annual fundraiser for the Corley-Mtn. RFD and brought in approximately $1,200 in profit. Everyone with the Corley-Mtn. RFD would like to thank everyone who made this year's event a success.

Brush Fire

Brush FireAt around 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 31, 2011, Corley-Mtn. firefighters were paged out for a fire on Corley pasture. The fire was actually located just off of Gutter Rock Rd. on an access road which leads to the Cove Lake trail.
The fire was spotted by someone who reported it to Logan 16, Robert Reames, a deputy with the Logan County Sheriff’s department. He went to check it out and found a fire and had the fire department paged out.
The fire was fortunately contained to a relatively small area. It was determined that it was lightening which started the fire. A storm moved through the area. However, rain did not fall at the location of the scene. Apparently lightening struck a tree which was found to have some bark missing off of it.
State forestry responded and used their dozer to make a fire line around the burned area to keep the fire contained.
Water, fire rakes, and a chain saw were used in fighting the fire. The fire was out within an hour of response. By 6 p.m. all units were dismissed.
Trucks that responded were 1801, 1804, and 1805. Personnel who responded were Shane Molton, Doug Carter, Dennis Moeller, Jackie Moeller, Cody Strahan, Matt Turner, Sean Anderson, and Bill Berry.

New Truck

On Monday, May 16, 2011 at approximately 11 a.m., a new truck was delivered to the John Strahan Firehouse. The truck was acquired under the DOD firefighter program through the Arkansas Forestry Commission. The only cost for this truck was the change of title and maintenance expenses. On the previous Friday, chief Shane Molton was contacted about the availability of the truck. The truck was originally supposed to go to the Velvet Ridge VFD near Bald Knob. Circumstances made it possible for the Corley-Mtn. VFD to obtain the truck. The truck is a 1999 American General truck which was used in the military. The truck is listed as a deuce 1/2. The truck will replace a 1965 Kaiser which is the last of the department’s two original trucks. 1808, a 1979 International will also be replaced by this truck.
